Defense Dept. Blocking MySpace, YouTube

DENVER (AP) – Soldiers serving overseas will lose some of their online links to friends and loved ones back home under a Department of Defense policy that a high-ranking Army official said would take effect Monday.

The Defense Department will begin blocking access “worldwide” to YouTube, MySpace and 11 other popular Web sites on its computers and networks, according to a memo sent Friday by Gen. B.B. Bell, the U.S. Forces Korea commander.

This comes as no surprise, well, actually there is a bit of a surprise involved, and that’s why it hasn’t been done already, there is too much information coming out of Iraq and Afghanistan, and the military has always censored communication from troops to home, and vice versa, to some degree…

The armed services have long barred members of the military from sharing information that could jeopardize their missions or safety, whether electronically or by other means.

It’s called Operational Security, or Op/Sec, and it’s been very lax of late, like oh, since 1993 or so, because if you really want to plug the leaks, look at the ‘anonymous sources said’ people in the current and previous administrations, and look at the MSM and hundreds of other Ernie Pyle wannabes, except in their case, they don’t have half the common sense Ernie Pyle had…

And speaking of Operational Security, why is it that almost any news source can find all the Taliban and al-Qaida fighters they want to find, and can interview them at will and film them launching RPG’s and shoulder fired rockets, but our guys can’t find em?? Why is that?? Makes you wonder who’s side the MSM is on doesn’t it??

The sites covered by the ban are the video-sharing sites YouTube, Metacafe, IFilm, StupidVideos and FileCabi; social networking sites MySpace, BlackPlanet and Hi5; music sites Pandora, MTV, 1.fm and live365; and the photo-sharing site Photobucket.

I think it’s long over due, maybe not so much with the videos but these networking neighborhoods, that’s tech speak for ‘Internet Whore Houses’, such as MySpace and the like, should be heavily edited, if not done away with altogether, I don’t care if Tom is my buddy or not…

I know that we live in the electronic age and data is broadcast world wide in seconds but we are involved in a battle, and there has got to be a lid placed on the troops and the information they are allowed to view on the ‘net or post TO the ‘net as long as they are engaged in doing the business of Uncle Sam…

  1. Well? It’s about time! While they are at it, maybe they could start following the newsperps around, and use them as bird dogs to find the islamotypes. If a few fall victim to “friendly fire” so be it.

  2. Basti says:

Remember what they said during WWII. “Loose lips sink ships!” It’s still true today. You can’t trust troops or anyone for that matter not to blab something or show something they shouldn’t. We all want to give out the ‘Insider Intel’. It’s human nature and something that is very difficult to guard against.
