Armed 85-year-old woman forces intruder to call cops

POINT MARION, Pa. (AP) — An 85-year-old woman boldly went for her gun and busted a would-be burglar inside her home, then forced him to call police while she kept him in her sights, police said.

“I just walked right on past him to the bedroom and got my gun,” Leda Smith said.

Smith heard someone break into her home Monday afternoon and grabbed the .22-caliber revolver she had been keeping by her bed since a neighbor’s home was burglarized a few weeks ago.

“I said ‘What are you doing in my house?’ He just kept saying he didn’t do it,” Smith said.

After the 17-year-old boy called 911, Smith kept holding the gun on him until state police arrived at her home in Springhill Township, about 45 miles south of Pittsburgh.

And this is the exact reason the American homeowner should be armed. When a 85 year old woman has more guts than many so-called men, well, go get em Granny, ya done good! :D

Recently we’ve had a string of home burglary attempts here in MY little corner of Texas. Daylight home invasions. And in ALL 5 incidents the residents have been home when these little thugs struck. And in all 5 instances there has been a reasonably good I.D. made of the burglars.

Now here’s the one thing that just torques me to no end. We have the The Castle Doctrine here in Texas, and thank God we do. Many of you also are aware of the case of Joe Horn and the shooting in Pasadena, TX and this: Joe Horn cleared by grand jury in Pasadena shootings

Now personally, I think the Castle Doctrine was used to push the envelope a bit on this one, but a clear precedent was set, in Texas, the homeowner is King of the Castle. King, that is, if he’s a gun owner and not afraid to actually USE a gun in defense of his home and family.

OK, back to the burglaries here in my little corner of Texas, 5 so far, good descriptions, a really good Police Department all over this thing, sounds good so far. Except for one little thing. The bad guys are still breathing free Texas air.

One of these daytime home invasions took place 4 or 5 houses down from me, on the opposite side of the street, the guy was home, he locked himself in an upstairs bedroom and called the police. When the burglars heard him slam the bedroom door, they fled, and in many ways, that’s a good thing I suppose, if the guy was unarmed and/or untrained, but the bad guys are still out there, on our streets, presenting a clear and present danger to all the decent homeowners in my little corner of Texas.

In all 5 cases the description was the same, height, weight, race, hair, vehicle, all of it. These little hoodlums are going to kick in the wrong door and some well armed and well trained retired military or law enforcement guy, a gun nut that loves to shoot, some of our survivalists types or just one of our all around wonderful CHL holding neighbors is going to punch their ticket and send their asses to hell. I wonder what kind of *racists* we’ll be when that happens.

Oh, I didn’t mention it?? Yeah, both are black. I didn’t want to be accused of *racism* or racial profiling by using that as a part of the description. :?

Actually a .22 has the right amount of power for her. At 85 a more powerful weapon’s recoil might injure her.

She shows the right spirit. Be very careful on the house you invade, they might have a gun or two or three or four. Especially if they are older citizens.

Get ‘em Granny! She likely saved that little punk’s life truth be known. At 17 when an 85 year old lady has the cold steel to your head…your thought processes are likely changed forever!

This reminds me of my Texas high school principal. When we used to get into any kind of trouble at school…the principal would stand and watch and make the kids dial their parents up on the phone and tell them what they had done. It’s a life changing experience, but there are a few hundred of us that remember that lesson today :)

And…if the self inflicted phone call didn’t do the trick…there was always that HUGE wooden paddle with the holes drilled in it awaiting your second trip to the office :)

Katie, sometimes rhetorical humor escapes you huh?? :?

Might be a good idea to load her up with .22LR HP CCI Stingers… I have, and carry on occasion, a .22 9 shot revolver, it’s about the same size as an S&W .38 Chief but I have it loaded with 9 rounds of the hottest .22 I can get..

Can you believe what’s happening in D.C. with the gun laws? They should put them all in jail for something…inhibiting the right to a citizen’s rights…something like that - anarchy, maybe.

Hey, enough rounds downrange from even a .22 can start making serious inroads on your life expectancy…

Just awesome! We need more pistol packin grannies like this! Too many of them are victimized. Perhaps this punk will pass the message on to his other punk friends - those old folk aren’t necessarily easy targets! Excellent.

    The 2nd Amendment at work!

Our Constitution is a wonderful thing, working perfectly unless some liberal judge throws a wooden shoe into the works. (Historically incorrect Star Trek reference…)

BTW: I know several cops that carry .22s as back-up weapons and the lowly .22 has been a favorite of gangsters for generations. It will get the job done in the hands of one determined enough. Not The Bull’s first choice, but if it works for ‘Granny’ then it is fine by me!

I have been purposely waiting to comment about this. Those that know me know why, those that don’t, don’t need to know.

What stood out to me was that this eighty-five year old woman just strolled by this punk. Then, calmly, and with the utmost cool. Put a gun to his head, and laid down the law.

As to the commentary about the 22 rim fire? Way back when GUNSIGHT was the premier school for those that were serious about gun fighting; I was taking the basic Tactical Pistol Instructor course, and we had one hell of a discussion about the advantages and disadvantages of particular types and calibers . The “discussion” got pretty heated. Then, the Colonel walked in on our conversation. Many have heard me repeat his words, here and elsewhere. ” A hit with a 22 beats the hell out of a miss with a 44 Magnum any day.”

Beyond all that, if you can secure a copy of “Political Assassination for Fun and Profit.” ( Privately published.) For close in work, they only speak of 22 long rifle and 9mm pistols, both suppressed, and used at ranges of less than one foot.

Enough said about the lowly 22.

Maybe we could take up a collection and get some better hardware, and a course for her at Front Sight..?

    :D
