9/11 suspects to be tried in NYC court

WASHINGTON - Self-proclaimed Sept. 11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and four other Guantanamo Bay detainees will be brought to trial in a civilian U.S. courthouse in New York, near the site of the devastating 2001 terror attacks, the Obama administration announced Friday. Prosecutors expect to seek the death penalty.

Attorney General Eric Holder announced the long-awaited and politically fraught decision at a news conference. He also said five other Guantanamo detainees, including a major suspect in the bombing of the USS Cole, Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri, will be tried through the military commission process.

Holder said the Sept. 11 defendants should be tried where their crimes occurred. Nearly 3,000 people died when the World Trade Center towers were brought down by two hijacked jetliners, another hijacked jet hit the Pentagon and a fourth crashed in the state of Pennsylvania.

“After eight years of delay, those allegedly responsible for that attacks of September the 11th will finally face justice,” Holder said. “They will be brought to New York — to New York — to answer for their alleged crimes in a courthouse just blocks away from where the twin towers once stood.”

In typical *knee-jerk* fashion, the reactionaries on Facebook are already calling for Americans to hold huge protests in New York City.

Becky Todzia: ok…who is ready to go to NYC to protest? I will go and stand with my fellow Americans and family members of 911 victims that are outraged over Holder announcing that the 911 muslim terrorists will be tried in civilian (not military) court at the courthouse in NYC, steps from Ground Zero. 300 families of 911 victims had contacted the WH asking them NOT to…Obama doesnt care. What do you expect from a muslim POTUS?

Several folks jumped all over the idea. They are ready to march on New York City right now. I had to ask a question of those folks, and hopefully, restore a bit of sanity to the reactionaries and their attempts to incite the masses in an unnecessary and totally ill-advised protest march.

Fred Witzell: WHY hit NYC? They didn’t ask for the trials did they? Take it to D.C. and take it all the way to the steps of the White House… The orders came from Eric Holder, on approval from Barack Hussein Obama… That’s D.C. folks, not NYC…

To the best of my knowledge, New York hasn’t asked to hold these trials. I am of the belief that taking these terrorist cretins to New York is the worst mistake Obama and Holder could possibly make. I believe they would bring more danger to the USA proper than they can even imagine.

The cost alone should be more than enough of a reason to leave these people in Guantanamo. They should be subjected to a military tribunal and summary sentencing by said tribunal. Does anyone, other than far left libbers and Obama supporters NOT see this?

We have the terrorists in a secure location, the U.S. Navy base at Guantanamo Bay. We can easily place the officers and staff needed to conduct a military tribunal, at Guantanamo. Why does Obama and Company insist on bring these monsters to U.S. soil and granting them the same rights enjoyed by American citizens?

Bringing such notorious suspects to U.S. soil to face trial is a key step in President Barack Obama’s plan to close the detention center at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Obama initially planned to close the center by Jan. 22, but the administration is no longer expected to meet that deadline.

This has NOTHING to do with ANY desire to close Guantanamo Bay. It has everything to do with the Muslim sympathizer in the Oval Office and his desire to alleviate the suffering of his fellow Muslims. These people, the terrorists, are NOT American citizens. They do NOT belong in a CIVILIAN court of law anywhere in this world.

The plan that Holder outlined is a major legal and political test of Obama’s overall approach to terrorism. If the case suffers legal setbacks, the administration will face second-guessing from those who never wanted it in a civilian courtroom. And if lawmakers get upset about terrorists being brought to their home regions, they may fight back against other parts of Obama’s agenda.

Eric Holder is, without a doubt, the most ignorant person to EVER hold the position of Attorney General. Barack Hussein Obama will not even acknowledge the word TERRORISM and the WAR on TERROR. In his mind, those things don’t exist.

As far as second-guessing is concerned, it’s already under way. And we have to hope that local lawmakers and New York City citizens raise all manners of HELL over this travesty and the outright DANGER it presents to NYC, and the rest of this nation.

Some family members of Sept. 11 victims were angered by the decision.

“We have a president who doesn’t know we’re at war,” said Debra Burlingame, whose brother, Charles Burlingame, was pilot of the hijacked plane that crashed into the Pentagon. She said she was sickened by “the prospect of these barbarians being turned into victims by their attorneys,” if the trial winds up focusing on allegations that the suspects were tortured after their capture.

Given the current mood of PCness that runs rampant through about 50% of this nation, and nearly all of our federal government and military, it would not be at all surprising to see these terrorists turned into victims by bleeding heart defense attorneys. And given the possibility of a less than Conservative judge, or judges in the state of New York, well, again, this is nothing less than a travesty and a slap in the face to ALL Americans, but most especially to those who lost their lives and loved ones in the attacks of 9-11-2001 and to all of the troops that have died fighting terrorism in the battle since.

Thank you, Fred! I am still too angry to write about this one. Just when I think BHO has made me as angry as I can get, he does something else. It just never ends. My heart goes out to the 9/11 families, especially..for whom this rubs more salt in the wounds that never heal.

    Thank you…

I’m still trying to figure out how they believe there is even constitutional authority for war criminals to be tried in an American civil court with full access to all that it grants. I suspect what will happen is the same thing that happened here in Florida in the Al-Arian case. Essentially, the man ended up getting deported because much of the information gathered on him was classified and protected - as such - it couldn’t be utilized against him.

Since in our courts the accused get to face their accusers - meaning they get to see all the information compiled against them and how it was compiled - since this will be sensitive information and could cause harm to our national security if disclosed - we won’t be able to mount a case against them.

Seems like this is the muslim sympathizers plan to me.

With that Muslim sympathizer being Obama?

The mayor and police commissioner of NYC today said there would be no problem with the trials being held there. But like you said Fred the cost will be in the millions and I mean tens of millions and maybe more. This thing will drag on for month after month and possibily year after year. Giving this murderers constitutional rights in our courts goes against 200+ years of tradition. There is little justice in this for the families of the 9/11 victems. All I can say is “take no more prisoners” we can question them, we have to give them constitutional rights—just shoot the bastards on the battle field under the white flag if necessary.

The NYC mayor is an idiot, just wanted to point that out…

The Chief of Police is quite likely kissing Bloomberg’s ass and walking the *party line*..

I am totally confused as to why the defense is even wanting to hold court in the city where all this took place. Not that these animals deserve a fair trial…but how in the hell are you going to find someone in NY that doesn’t know what happened there on 9-11-01????

You are either going to have everyone against these guys and want them hanged in Central Park at high noon…or you are going to have to get a jury of all Muslims that want to make them a hero.

Either way there is going to be trouble in NYC.

Even though this was an act of war against us….it was carried out by civilians and was against civilians….so a military trial is out….but how are they going to get a fair trial??? I’m all for shooting them now to save time and money.

I have to totally disagree with you this time. They were Islamic Jihad warriors, and we have yet to fight ANY uniformed ARMY since this war on terror started.

If your statement about civilians IS the reason, we have been murdering many *other* civilians… Ya see what I mean?

I’m bracing myself for this “so called trial” as I think “the American People” will be on trial, rather than the scum sucking terrorists!!!
It will be a liberal insanity zoo where, rather than bringing these dirt bags to the justice they deserve… a firing squad, they will be held up as “victims of American Imperialism”. It all just makes me sick.

I doubt the people of NY want those products of inferior breeding there. It’s politicians who want them there. Politicians like that idiot Bloomberg who just wants to make a bigger name for himself. You can bet the ACLU lawyers are fighting amongst themselves for who gets to represent these scum.

I fear you are right BobF. It is also fodder for those who want to vilify the CIA and people who worked hard to keep us safe from further carnage. It is horrible when you have an inept, idiot in the White House who is a terrorist/muzzie and commie sympathizer. The man and his minions simply don’t care about the lives of American citizens. Bloomberg is nothing but a barking moonbat.

They will be turned into victims and Bush will be turned into the villian, that is what this trial is all about. Never in history have we given constitional rights to people we caught on the battlefield fighting against us. But that is what political correctness has brought us.
