PBS host Smiley calls meeting to urge black agenda
Two months after ending his annual State of the Black Union conference, Tavis Smiley is gathering African-American advocates to press the case for a “black agenda.”
The decision was motivated by what Smiley called recent statements from some black leaders downplaying the need for President Barack Obama to specifically help African-Americans.
“I was compelled to do it because of this debate,” the activist and PBS talk show host said Wednesday.
The panel discussion will be March 20 at Chicago State University. Panelists include advertising pioneer Tom Burrell, professors Michael Eric Dyson and Cornel West, Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan, the Rev. Jesse Jackson, and Bennett College President Julianne Malveaux.

PBS host Smiley calls meeting to urge black agenda
So let me get this straight. African-American advocates are going to have a conference and the topic is going to be the case for a “black agenda.”?
Just to be all fair and balanced, what would the Black community call it if there was a conference held and it’s main reason for being was to advance the WHITE agenda?
Somehow, I am almost certain they would call it a Klan meeting.
What credibility does it lend your cause when you tout the likes of Louis Farrakhan and Je$$e Jack$on as members of you dais and are going to give them an another avenue in which they can vent their hatred of all things NOT Black, and in Farrakhan’s case, an opportunity to rail against America itself?
I am often accused of being a racist, and I have NEVER denied the fact that I am, with certain caveats, mine being, I don’t hate anyone because of their skin color. Louis Farrakhan makes NO exception, he HATES anyone that’s WHITE.
Black leaders are always stressing the plight of the Black person in America. Stressing how they have been kept down, denied jobs and higher education simply because of the color of their skin.
I personally believe that to be nothing more than pure hog-wash!
All Americans are on equal footing today, we ALL have unlimited possibilities open to us. What has to happen is this, these RACE BAITERS need to drop the word AFRICAN from their hate filled rhetoric. They need to realize that the plight of the Black community is brought on, for the most part, by the Black community and they need to stop blaming THEIR failings on the WHITE man and events that occurred in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
Once these so-called leaders and activists lose THEIR racism, they may be shocked to discover that there aren’t nearly as many WHITE DEVILS out there as they believe.
One other thing, this African-American term that so many like to use. Which are they? Africans or Americans? Because you can’t be BOTH!
Were ANY of the participants of this conference BORN in Africa? No, they weren’t. These guys are no more African than I am. They are the descendants of IMMIGRANTS, just like me, just like most Americans. In fact, they rail against Barack Hussein Obama and he has much closer ties to Africa than any of the people raising the most hell about the plight of the African-American!
What needs to end is ANY reference to hyphenated-American ANYTHING. America 1st, for AMERICANS. And if you don’t consider yourself to be an AMERICAN, and nothing else, then this is not your home! You are nothing more than a visitor and it’s time for you to go to whatever nation it is that you consider to be your home. I’m sure they will welcome you with open arms.
I am guessing that if this next quote is indicative of the thinking in Black community, there are many within that community that feel the same way about the antics of Tavis Smiley and Company as we do.
Once upon a time there were two Black men who were considered our “leaders.” Martin Luther King, Jr., was a soft-spoken, but eloquent Baptist preacher who spoke of the content of our character meaning more than the color of our skin. Malcolm X was the fiery acolyte of Elijah Muhammad who thundered about the wickedness of the White Man and “the bullet or the ballot.”
Martin and Malcolm had little in common with each other except neither of them ever enjoyed the universal support of the people they purported to lead. The true stress test of leadership is does their stature diminish or grow over the passage of time. On that score, Martin and Malcolm have established themselves as two sides of the same coin and though their tactics couldn’t have been more different, they both wanted the same objective: freedom for Black people.
Once you’ve seen the real thing in action, how the hell are you going to settle for the clown act of Tavis Smiley and Al Sharpton? That’s like trading in Miles Davis for ‘Lil Wayne. That’s also why the recent bitch-slap between the two race hustlers is something I don’t take seriously.
Tavis pulled the plug on his annual State of the Black Union slumber party, but since he can’t go an entire year without some sort of pseudo ”event,” he’s offering up instead “We Count! The Black Agenda is the American Agenda.” What exactly is this “Black Agenda?” Apparently, Smiley is expecting a big dose of big spending by the Obama Adminstration on programs specifically targeted to aid and assist Blacks. It’s also an excuse for Tavis to prove yet again his swaggering self-importance never takes a day off. SOURCE
Let’s face facts, shall we? ALL Americans, of ALL races, have serious trouble on their hands right now. We can either face those troubles together, and find a way OUT of trouble, as a nation of Americans, united to saving this great country, or, we can continue to fight as individual races and ethnic groups and accomplish nothing other than the Balkanization of America.
