Russia says it wants to help US in Afghanistan

MOSCOW (AP) - President Dmitry Medvedev said Wednesday that Russia and its ex-Soviet allies want to help the United States stabilize Afghanistan, saying Moscow wanted “full-fledged” cooperation with Washington.

He spoke a day after the ex-Soviet republic of Kyrgyzstan announced it would evict the U.S. from an air base key to the Afghan war. Kyrgyzstan made the move after getting a promise for $2 billion in loans from Russia - which resents the American presence in a region Moscow regards as part of its traditional sphere of influence.

The possibility of the base closure poses a serious challenge to the new U.S. administration and President Barack Obama’s plan to send up to 30,000 more American forces into Afghanistan this year.

“Russia and other (alliance members) are ready for full-fledged comprehensive cooperation with the United States and other coalition members in fighting terrorism in the region. This fight must be comprehensive and include both military and political components. Only in the case will this have a chance to succeed,” Medvedev said.

Russia says it wants to help US in Afghanistan

The Russians want to HELP us?? In Afghanistan?? Seriously??

For any of you that don’t recall or are too young to remember, the United States was, once upon a time, friends with, and supporters of the Taliban. We financed them, we trained them, we equipped them and we encouraged them to kick the Russians a new ass a while back. This was referenced a while back in a movie called ‘Charlie Wilson’s War’.

Charlie Wilson was real. Gust Avrakotos was REAL! The actions depicted in that movie were a hell of a lot more accurate than some folks would care to admit.

The actions of the United States, through it’s covert operations in Afghanistan and other neighboring nations, were a direct and definitive factor in Russia being decimated financially. The Russians were fought long and hard by a rag-tag bunch of Afghan insurgents and mostly U.S. Intel guys. The Russians were pushed to the point of being rendered all but bankrupt, they were almost completely drained financially and the Soviet Union collapsed.

Sounds a hell of a lot like what’s been going on in Iraq to me. We have spent like we have bottomless pockets, to fight an enemy that has attacked in an insurgent manner, funded and supplied by outside sources. We have effectively had the tables turned on us.

We have been brought to the verge of national bankruptcy. Some of it is because of bad business deals and mismanagement, that can’t be denied, but much of it is over the untold BILLIONS of tax dollars that have been wasted in an effort to build some kind of friendly government in Iraq. A government that would have NO compunctions about stabbing us in the back at the earliest opportunity!

Anyone that would take a gesture from Russia seriously, a gesture, a suggestion that they want to help the U.S. in Afghanistan, is beyond help. I am therefore pretty well convinced that in the near future, Obama will be announcing a NEW alliance between the U.S.A. and Russia. Obama has yet to meet an enemy of this nation that he didn’t think he could turn the other way. The Russians haven’t forgotten Afghanistan and how they were taken down. Apparently they are hoping Obama will fall for this ploy!

I thought that after the disaster they had in Afghanistan in the 1980′s, they would want to stay out. What are their REAL motives? A piece of the new pipeline that is being built?

Also, didn’t the US train bin Laden to fight the Russians? I don’t know if bin Laden is alive or dead but it seems to me the reason he hasn’t been captured is because he was trained by the best in the world in escape and evasion.

Bob, right on the money, Bin Laden is a production of the very best training WE had to offer…

Alive or dead?? I am guessing dead, I have for a long time… But, some think he’s still out there, Bush was one of them, and THAT is just another reason I had little, if ANY respect for Bush…

This would oh so obviously invite a fifth column into the area that would work against American interest’s that I for one believe that the Obama has to be all for it.

Patrick, I wouldn’t be at ALL surprised if he didn’t nurture it…
